How a Laminate Plank Is Built
Laminate is a layered plank. Understanding the layers is the easiest way to compare two products that look nearly identical on a showroom rack.
Wear layer
A clear coating rated by AC class. AC3 suits bedrooms, AC4 is our standard recommendation for family homes, and AC5 is commercial grade.
Design layer
The printed layer that creates the wood or stone look. Better products use more plank variations and texture that lines up with the printed grain.
HDF core
High-density fiberboard, usually 8mm to 12mm. Thicker cores feel more solid underfoot and bridge minor subfloor imperfections better.
Backing or attached pad
Balances the plank and softens sound. Attached pad saves a step, but on concrete slabs we still add a moisture barrier.
Laminate Pricing in Fremont County
These are the ranges most of our laminate quotes fall into. Your written estimate is based on actual measurements, the product you choose, and what we find under the old floor.
| Item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Material | $2.29 - $4.99 / sq ft | Waterproof and thicker-core laminates sit at the top of the range |
| Installation | $2.50 - $3.50 / sq ft | Includes underlayment, transitions, and trimming doors |
| Old floor removal | $0.50 - $1.50 / sq ft | Carpet and pad come up quickly, glued sheet vinyl takes longer |
| Floor leveling | Quoted as needed | Common in older Cañon City and Florence homes with settled subfloors |
Subfloors in Older Cañon City Homes
Much of the housing around Cañon City, Florence, and Penrose was built long before click-lock flooring existed. Laminate floats, so it telegraphs every dip and hump beneath it. During the measure we check three things:
- Flatness. Manufacturers want no more than 3/16" of variation over 10 feet. Older joist-framed floors often need patching or self-leveler.
- Slab moisture. Basement and slab-on-grade rooms get a moisture reading before we commit to a floating install.
- Existing layers. Cushioned sheet vinyl and old carpet have to come out. Well-bonded hard surfaces can sometimes stay in place.
Where Laminate Works Best
Great fit
Living rooms, hallways, bedrooms, home offices, and rental properties where you want a hardwood look on a tighter budget.
Choose something else
Full bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, and below-grade basements. For those spaces we point people to waterproof luxury vinyl or tile.
Waterproof laminate options
We offer waterproof laminate that handles spills, pet accidents, and everyday moisture better than standard laminate. It is a great middle-ground choice for kitchens, mudrooms, and busy households that want a wood look with extra protection.
Laminate Flooring Questions We Hear
Is laminate flooring waterproof?
We offer both water-resistant and fully waterproof laminate options. Our waterproof laminate performs well in kitchens, mudrooms, and other wet areas where traditional laminate is not recommended. For full bathrooms, laundry rooms, and below-grade basements we still recommend waterproof luxury vinyl instead.
What does laminate flooring cost in Cañon City?
Most laminate projects we quote land between $5 and $8 per square foot installed, depending on the wear layer, plank thickness, and how much prep the subfloor needs. A typical 500 square foot living room and hallway usually falls in the $2,500 to $4,000 range. Your free estimate confirms exact pricing.
What does the AC rating mean?
AC stands for Abrasion Class and measures how well the wear layer resists scuffing. AC3 is fine for bedrooms, AC4 is our usual recommendation for family homes, and AC5 is commercial grade. We mostly order AC4 and AC5 laminate for Fremont County homes that deal with pets and dry, gritty conditions.
Can laminate go over my existing floor?
Often yes. Laminate floats, so it can go over plywood, concrete, and many existing hard surfaces as long as they are flat, dry, and sound. Old carpet and cushioned sheet vinyl have to come out first. We check flatness and slab moisture during the measure appointment.
How long does laminate installation take?
Most single-level homes in Cañon City are finished in one to two days once the material arrives. Laminate is typically ordered for your project and usually takes one to two weeks to reach our store.
How do I clean laminate floors?
Sweep or vacuum with the beater bar off, then damp mop with a laminate-safe cleaner. Avoid steam mops and wet mopping, since standing water is what damages the seams. Felt pads under furniture and a mat at each entry do more for the finish than any cleaner.
